Why in the game Second Life online is there been a "constant" lag?

When you log on, and even if you make the proper adjustments, there is a constant Lag in the graphics. There is no known way to contact the Lindens to ask why or complain. Alot of money is spent with the program. Wondering if anyone else has has experienced a similar problem.
