1995 jetta auto locking mechanizinm.?

I have a 95 jetta and when i turn my key to lock the drivers side door it will not lock the other doors. i can hear a noise in the back of the trunk and by reading forums i have found that that noise is my car trying to lock the doors. i can not find any info on how these work not even the haynes manual. can anyone help me.
